English for Specific Purposes
is a program to teach a specific genre of English for learners with specific
goals. English for journalist is a kind of English in specific purposes. Journalist
is a person who writes or edits news items for a newspaper or magazine or for
radio or television. Of course, in practicing the works, the journalist will be
not far from communication whether with people in local countries or abroad. In
this section, I would like to try to design the course of English for
journalist. The analysis that will be done is how important English is in
journalism’s world. English for journalist has been designed according to the
need perceived academic journalist. Why the learners need this course? This
course is created from a communicative perspective and is taught by means of
task based methodology. Learners have to carry out a series of tasks and
projects related to different topics within the field of journalism. In those tasks
and projects, learners will use English, both receptively and productively, to
accomplish the objectives set for each task or longer-term project. As far as
materials are concerned, reading and listening exercises have been designed
with authentic materials.
- Contents of Course Design
The contents of the course
will revolve around the five major areas in which journalists need training in
English: documentation, interviewing, e-mail communication, telephone language,
and socializing. Where in each area have each division.
Documentation: natural disasters, immigration, armed
conflicts, elections, terrorism, cloning, business scandals, peace talks, crime
and punishment, film reviews, technology, sports, arts, and headline language,
among others.
While interviewing, written interviews, telephone
interviews, face-to-face interviews, and press conferences.
E-mail communication: Requesting, thanking, and
apologizing, among others.
Telephone
language: obtaining information and making arrangements, among others.
By the end of
this course, there are many kinds of the target that should be got by the
learners that was divided into four objectives. They are:
Objective 1: Oral
production and interaction
o
Learners should show command of media-related
terms. They should be able to talk about the most common news topics (e.g.
disasters, armed conflicts, immigration, etc.) with precise and accurate
vocabulary.
o
Learners should display a basic ability to
interview sources. They should be able to master different question types,
pragmatic markers, and formulaic language.
o
Learners should be able to keep a conversation
over the phone, with the use of typical formulas.
o
Learners should be able to socialize in English,
use conversational formulas, be able to produce small talk, to tell personal
narratives, and to negotiate.
Objective 2: Reading
Comprehension
o
Learners should be able to abstract information
from both introductory and specialized journalism-related texts.
o
Learners are expected to find specific
information in news articles, press releases, official reports, scientific
reports, statistical reports, among others.
o
Learners must be able to interpret the main
ideas in opinion and feature articles, and to guess complex meanings from
context.
Objective 3: Listening Comprehension
o
Learners should be able to understand and
interpret the information in TV news and radio news broadcasts.
o
Learners should be able to understand high- and
medium-frequency news-related and media-unrelated words, and show they can
guess the meaning of low-frequency words from contextual cues.
o
Learners must show they understand their
interlocutor during normal interaction and that they have some strategies to
overcome communication breakdowns, as well as show understanding of pragmatic
information.
Objective 4: Written
production
o Learners
must show their ability to communicate through writing in professional situations,
such as to arrange interviews or request information.
o Learners
must be able to demonstrate sophisticated organizational skills when writing,
display use of complex connectors, complex structures, formulaic language, as
well as idioms and collocations.
Materials
The materials for this course will be taken from some
sources, such as from e-book (Essential English for Journalists; Evans, H),
text book (Gilabert, R. English for Journalists) and others media that
supported. I will take some examples the material for Journalist, such as the
learners will be given some newspaper whether Indonesian newspaper or out of
country newspaper. It will including to the topic about Bellows are some examples of contents of
newspaper that will be learnt. (Next page)
Learning Activities
In learning
activities section, the course will give the learners some activities that have
some function as follow:

to improve linguistic and communicative strategies
involved in the five main groups of tasks that journalists need to perform
where in this course including documentation, interviewing, e-mail communication,
telephone language, and socializing.

to make learners familiar with the most common
words, idioms, and metaphors of the language in the media.
·
to develop reading, speaking, listening, and
writing skills as associated with media topics.
·
to raise learners’ awareness of how language
choices influence meanings in the media.
Assessment
Indicate assessment methods, e. g. written, project presentation and
final examination. Indicate criteria for each specific form of assessment and
indicate the share of each assessment component for the final grade.
Attendance 10%,
mid-term assessment 30%, project presentation 30% and final-examination 30%.

- Theoretical Background
The starting point for all language teaching should be an understanding
of how people learn. According to learning activities, where the learners are
demanded to develop their skills in four skills, to make them familiar with the
words or idioms in Journalist world and to make them easy in understanding of communicative.
In this section, theoretical background of this course is near to behaviorism. Where
the situation and activities are quiet support this course is based on
behaviorism. In other side, in this course will be found the elements of
behaviorism learning such as stimulus and response the materials or subject and
topics.
